The characteristic of Thermostatic Wax consists of its volume expansion amount can reach up to 13 ~ 15 % when it is heated from solid to liquid. When the cylindrical part is heated, Thermostatic Wax in the part is also heated and making a solid-liquid transformation expansion, Thermostatic Wax pushes thermostat’s itself handspike to open the valve. When the cylindrical part gets cold, Thermostatic Wax also cooled and start to shrink, Thermostatic Wax pushes itself handspike back to original situation under the return load force to close up the valve to realize automatic temperature control.

Due to the ever increasing fight for high efficiency and fuel economy, automobile manufacturers, especially in Europe, have developed the clutch-less AC compressor. Sanden being one of those compressor manufacturers, has develop the PXE series variable displacement AC compressor, which we’ll use as a study example for this technology. On standard compressors, the belt turns a pulley with an electric clutch. When you turn on the AC, the clutch engages, and the piston starts pumping to compress the refrigerant. There are two problems with this traditional approach. One, a compressor needs a fair amount of power. In cars with small engines, the engagement of the clutch to activate the compressor puts a big load on the engine, especially if it is idling. Two, the compressor will produce low flow or not enough when the engine is idling, and high flow when the engine is at high RPM and possibly too much refrigerant flow.
